[I knew I was struggling to make ends meet lately, but it didn’t help that as I opened my mail, I found my statement showing I had incurred bank charges!] [ I couldn’t believe it. Not only did I not have any money, but I was now in minus… I owed the bank money for not having any money! How ridiculous was that? Why didn’t they just reject the card when I tried to use it, instead of taking me into minus?] [I researched the charge on the net, and found to my amazement, that even if they hadn't taken my account into minus, and just rejected it, I would still have got charged! ] [This is profit the banks are making on absolutely nothing. After research myself, I wanted to be armed with knowledge before I contested the bank charges with the bank. I realised there are many people out there who have had the same bank charges and are trying to fight the banks to claim it back.] [In order to claim these monies back, I had to dig out all my documentation/statements for more than a year ago! I found out I could claim back up to 5 years worth! ] [There was no way I was going to have statements still in one piece dating back 5 years! But it would be well worth trying to get them, as I’m sure I’ve paid various other bank charges in the past. ] [In order to get my statements I would have to write to the bank requesting this, then write again after requesting the money; if they refused I would have to take them to court….] [I realised I may not have the time or the energy to fight this case, but we were talking about quite a bit of money if I won the right to reclaim my bank charges. I found a company online, that would take care of retrieving my money, right from the start, on a no win no fee basis. so I wouldn't lose anything if I lost! there was hardly any reason for me to refuse. the case is still pending.... its the waiting game now!] bank charges

Recession Bites in Britain

Today its official. The UK economy is in recession. Confirmation of this widely known fact came today (23rd Jan) from the Office for National Statistics whose figures showed that the economy has shrunk by 1.5% in the final quarter of 2008.

This latest fall follows the previous fall of 0.6% in the third quarter of 2008. This is the steepest fall since 1980 and exceeds the predicted fall of 1.2%. Sterling continued to fall, losing another 3 cents against the dollar. The exchange rate was only $1.357 to the pound at the start of the day.

Economists are saying that this fall in GDP is staggering. Some economists are saying that complete financial meltdown has been averted but there is an expectation that this latest recession will be deeper than that experienced in the early 1980s.

The current economic crisis started with the 2007 US housing market debacle. Almost every sector of the UK economy is now adversely affected. There is no longer any debate regarding whether the UK will enter a recession. Discussion is now focussed on how deep the recession will be and how long it will last.

Early predictions suggested that the recession would match that experienced in the 1990s but new estimates are saying that this latest recession will be equally as bad as that experienced in the 1980s and likely to be a lot worse. The big difference between previous recessions and now is that this economic crisis is worldwide. There is no market sector that is unaffected.

It is expected that the recession will push unemployment to levels that have not been seen for decades. Falling demand for products and services is already leading to many employers having to lay off employees, many of whom would have considered their jobs to be safe.

Shares in Barclays Bank in the UK have sky rocketed over the last weekend. The shares have risen 40%, snapping a nine session losing streak as the under-pressure bank said it sees significant pre-tax profits in the year of 2008 and is not seeking any further capital rising. In a recent open letter to shareholders and customers alike, published on Monday the 26th January, Barclays repeated its forecast, issued on January 16th that it expected to report a full year profit before tax “well ahead” of the market’s consensus estimate of 5.3 billion pounds in total. Barclays bank had to refine their own logistics by commissioning a new asset management software package to keep track of the entire rise in stock. Such asset tracking could cost the customer or consumer or person millions of pounds so it is important to keep track of all the shares and stocks.
If Barclays is able to avoid capital raising until after the end of June which is practically the start of the new financial year it would unwind much of the damage done in the past week, as it would avoid triggering the anti-dilution clauses in the Middle East contracts. Middle East investors have recently pumped seven billion pounds into Barclays in October, and a clause in that deal said that if that bank raised any more capital before the beginning of June in 2008 then they would receive a greater number of shares for their original investment.
Before the bounce Barclarys’ shares had lost more than two thirds of their value over the last 2 weeks on concerns that the bank will be forced to raise their own fresh capital as write downs mount in tandem with the ever slowing global economy.
It is a very confusing time for everyone at the moment. There is no telling which banks across the world are trust worthy or even stable considering the current economic crisis. Who knows what could unfold as the weeks go by.
